Interviews - Radio, TV, Podcast

On June 15, 2008, The Tennessean, Middle TN's largest newspaper, ran the first of a series of articles on baby boomers and the perils of retirement for that group. The picture focusing on Ron Firmin was on the front page of the paper with the article, "Cost of Retiring Alarming Boomers".

Excerpts from article.

Ron Firmin, a former mortgage banker-turned-author, is 61 years old and lives in Murfreesboro. "I think I'm to blame as a member of the baby boomer generation. Although I had been in the financial services industry, I still needed to improve my own financial decision making. I made it my business to become a better investor and manager of my own PRA." Firmin said. "We need to be better informed personally."

Firmin is one of many baby boomers now responsible for making their own investment decisions as they save for retirement. He said he lost tens of thousands in the stock market, after the technology bust in 2002.

That experience forms the basis of a book he has written, Fire Your Financial Planner, which Firmin said is exactly what he did after losing almost a third of his retirement savings. In his book, Ron details how he made a forturne ... and lost it and then recovered by taking control of the management of his personal retirement account.

CORRECTION: The Tennessean said that "Ron Firmin, left, gets training in an online investment tool. Firmin, 61, figures he can't retire for three to five years because of bad investments and a failed mortgage business." The reporter was contacted about the incorrect statement that Ron had "a failed mortgage business". She admitted that she had gotten confused with multiple interviews. That statement was not correct because a major bank employed Ron and he shut down his mortgage operation - this matter is addressed in detail in Fire Your Financial Planner which the reporter had but did not read before her report.

Host Michael DelGiorno interviews Ron Firmin about his new book, "Fire Your Financial Planner". This interview was heard on WTN 99.7 FM on 5/16/08.
